In five of the last six seasons, the Sharks have been the best regular season team in the Platinum Division, three times in first place, a second place and a third place. Except for that one quick dip into last place to nab Nico Hischier, a pretty solid record. Playoffs, a different story, only making it out of the first round twice, and never advancing to the final.
The Sharks have a decent but aging offence and they are right up against the salary cap, someone is going to have to go. It would seem that this season is to either go for it all, make that big acquisition, or start the rebuild. The salary cap issue could be a problem to go for it all.
Tavares is the star, with Kane and Wheeler right behind making up a really good first line. Good depth in the next two lines, probably the second best in their division. All those top finishes have left the prospect cupboard pretty bare, but he has a few gems in Logan Brown, Lias Andersson, Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson and Evgeny Svechnikov. Offence rating: 5th
Defence could be the Sharks downfall. No point per gamers, but John Carlson might come close. In a go for it all scenario, this is what needs to be improved the most. Not likely to be a big help this year, but a couple of good ones on the way in Thomas Chabot and Jakob Chychrun. Defence rating: 5th
The Sharks are good enough to make the playoffs with the team they have, but are they good enough to get out of the first round? Go for it, or rebuild, time will tell.
Breakout Player: Lias Andersson
Top Rookie: Jakob Forsbacka-Karlson
Season Prediction: 27 - 21 - 6 - 60 pts, 2nd place Platinum Division, 5th overall.
